Journal Entries:

July 21st: This is my first day as an intern at Asante Africa Foundation. This organization fundraises for education in Kenya and Tanzania. I am the Youth in Action Coodinator for the Youth in Action sub unit for Asante. I went into the office to meet with the current workers and everyone seems kind and passionate about what they are doing. There wasn't much action today since it was my first day.

July 26th: Today, I was set up with an Asante email. Nick is the guy who helps me understand my jobs and whatnot. He told me to research more about the organization to get myself familiar with all the different things going on like events, fundraisers, and visits. I looked more into the Asate walk-a-thon since it has to do with the youth. It's more of a publicity event to get everyone familiar with the concept of Asante. I will be putting on one of these so it is good to stay informed.

July 29th: There will be another high school intern coming soon to work with Asante. I will be working with him a lot on the youth projects and events. Nick told me about the new fundraising idea of sponsering a run in San Francisco. We could pass out flyers and publicize Asante more through this.

July 31st: I am currently taking a tough SAT prep course with this internship going on as well. My internship at Asante creates too much work for me to handle, so I unfortunately had to quit. It was really difficult leaving this organization because everyone is so kind and welcoming. I now have to search for another internship to take on, one without a huge work load. My dad said I could intern at his business, TNIS Systems, and I agreed.

August 5th: So I now intern at my dad's business and it is a lot less work than the work I had to do with Asante. This is really nice since I am allowed to study more for my SATs! Since I am new here I am just getting to know the people and I am trying to familiarize myself with this office building. Nothing much happened today. It is kind of a boring environment since everyone is much older than I am and I have no interest in telecommunications.

August 9th: Today, I just had to book appointments, organize meetings, and update the calendar. I basically serve as a “reminder person” for the people in the company. For instance, I had to take a call for the VP and set up a meeting for him. It is a really simple and easy internship to currently handle.

August 13th: I keep track of all the dates, upcoming events, and meetings. Therefore, I have to be very organized with my work. I keep a planner by my side at all times and I update my phone’s calendar for reminders as well. I worked as the accounting assistant. I worked with the company’s accountant and learned a few things about finances. I learned how to read financial records and how to analyze them. It was really interesting to learn about financial reports and I soon was able to analyze them on my own without the accountant’s help.

August 17th: After serving as the accounting assistant, I learned to be quick with my numbers and to keep track of all the different receipts and records. I set aside different folders and binders to keep track of all the different reports. I spent most of the day just organizing different files of numbers and reports into cabinets.

August 21st: I helped with general office works. I answered the company’s phone and assisted the person on the other end of the phone. I had to answer by addressing the business name first. In the beginning of the day I forgot to do this a lot, but as time passed, it came out smoothly. I also had to be very cheerful and lively when I came into the office. I wanted to set a good vibe! There were some days that were stressful or bad, but I had to be professional and separate my mood and work at times.

August 23rd:  When I began this internship, I was worried that I would have a huge work load, and I didn’t want this internship to resemble the internship I had before. But I actually had a wonderful time at TNIS. Everyone was really friendly and supportive. I was able to learn a lot of business etiquette and jargon. I was worried that people would not be very open to helping me, but there was always someone to help me in my times of need. I ended my internship on August 23rd and I miss the people and the environment already!

Closing Report:

Overall, I had a great time with both my internships. I wish I had the time and availability to have helped Asante a lot more since it was something I was super passionate about. I love human rights and the idea of everyone deserving a good education. The people at Asante were friendly and I already had a high internship position. However, I am also glad I had a good time at TNIS. Since I had SAT prep classes, I knew TNIS would be better in the long run for me. I also very much had a great time working with my dad's company. I learned how to be professional in a work environment. I did a lot of easy jobs and it took up a lot of my time. I learned to work with others twice my age and it never got too awkward. I enjoyed both my internships and I cannot wait to have more as time goes by.
